Jerry was born and raised in Washington D.C. and attended D.C. Public Schools graduating from Dunbar High School in 1970.  While in high school, Jerry was voted Washington D.C. Student Of The Year by the Afro American newspaper.  Jerry attended both Bowie State College University graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and Webster University graduating with a Masters Of Arts degree in Management in 1984.

Jerry was an educator teaching social studies in the Anne Arundel County Public School system.  Upon leaving the school system, Jerry joined the United States Army and was commissioned as a military officer.  He served a portion of his military career with the elite 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  While serving with the 82nd Airborne Division, Jerry achieved the highest paratrooper designation of Jumpmaster. 

Upon leaving active duty military service, Jerry began a career in real estate, becoming one of the top real estate agents in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.  In 1994 Jerry opened his own real estate brokerage becoming CEO of Mathis Realtors, Incorporated.  Under Jerry's direction Mathis Realtors, for numerous years, has been recognized as one of the top real estate companies in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. 

Jerry has served Prince George's County not only as a businessman but also as an ardent political and community activist.  He has advocated for citizen empowerment in all aspects of societal, economic and political issues that affect the lives of the citizens of Prince Georges County.  Jerry's record advocating for the citizens of Prince George's county is unimpeachable and unrelenting.
